Download Time

Estimate how long a file takes to download from its size in megabytes and your connection speed in megabits per second. It multiplies the size by 8 to convert bytes to bits, then divides by the link speed. Real-world time runs a bit longer due to overhead.

Worked example

Time: 120 s · ≈: 2 min

Inputs

Frequently asked

Why multiply by 8?

File sizes are in bytes (MB) but connection speeds are in bits (Mbps), and there are 8 bits per byte.

Why is my real download slower?

Protocol overhead, server limits and Wi-Fi mean you rarely hit the full advertised speed.
