Percent Change

Measure the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers — a price hike, a stock move, a weight change. It reports both the percent change and the raw difference.

💡 Good to know: Percentage changes don't reverse: +50% then −50% doesn't return you to the start, because the base you divide by changed.

Worked example

Change: 25% · Difference: 25

How it’s solved

Worked on the example above, step by step — follow along and you can do it on paper next time, no tool required.

  1. Percent change measures the gap between the new and old values as a share of the old value.
  2. Find the raw difference (new − old)
    125 − 100 = 25
  3. Divide by the old value
    25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  4. Multiply by 100 for a percent
    0.25 × 100 = 25%
